SAMDO VILLAGE
Samdo is a mountain village in northern Gorkha, surrounded by dramatic Himalayan landscapes.
Visitors come here for the peaceful environment, local culture and the remarkable setting among the mountains.
Hotel Snowlion offers a comfortable place to rest while experiencing this special part of Nepal.
ON THE MANASLU CIRCUIT
Samdo sits at around 3,860m (12,700ft) on the Manaslu Circuit Trek and is the last proper settlement before trekkers cross the Larkya La pass at 5,106m (16,750ft) — one of the highest and longest passes in the Himalayas.
EXPERIENCE SAMDO
Cheo Himal, Himlung Himal and Kung Guru are visible around the village, with a short climb to the Samdo viewpoint for the full valley view toward Larkya La.
Samdo was settled by Tibetan refugees, and their descendants still live here. Stone houses, mani walls and a small monastery line the paths between homes.
Farming and running teahouses are the two trades up here — there isn't room for much else at this altitude, so close to the Tibet border.
After Samdo, the only stop before the pass is Dharmashala — four teahouses at 4,460m, not a village. Many trekkers add a rest day here first to acclimatize.
STAY IN SAMDO
After spending time in the mountain environment, return to Hotel Snowlion for comfortable rooms, warm blankets, hot showers and a welcoming dining room.
